Being a great yoga instructor comes from having a solid understanding of yoga asana (postures) through theory and practice. In the spring course, we’ll pare your practice down to its bare bones, and build it back up on a strong foundation of research and experience so you know what postures do, and why you’d do them (or not do them) to build your best practice.

In this course you’ll learn:
  • how bodies work, by studying anatomy (how we’re built), kinesiology (us in motion), and biomechanics (how external and internal forces act on us)
  • the benefits and contradictions of yoga movements, based on yoga’s core principle of ahimsa, or ‘doing no harm’ as well as the latest research in functional movement, including that of Back Biomechanics specialist Dr. Stu McGill.
  • the key foundational yoga postures that will be your building blocks for your own creative, effective yoga flow sequences, based on the basic Pranalife PowerFlow sequence
  • the purpose of postures, through your own practice and with feedback on how postures work with different goals and limitations

The first six weeks are an immersion in the physical practice of yoga. We draw from the basic Pranalife PowerFlow sequence to learn a foundational set of yoga postures and how to flow wisely through them. You’ll spend plenty of time practicing, modifying, and analyzing postures, and getting individual feedback on how postures work in your body as well as other bodies with different goals and limitations.

This teaching is very accessible – no previous training in anatomy, etc. required – with plenty of time to review, practice, explore, and grow more confident that you know what you’re doing in your practice before you try to teach that practice to other people. By the end of the training you’ll better understand what postures you need, when, and why, and how to break every posture and sequence down into its components to make them work for you and your clients’ goals.

Asia’s teachings of yoga philosophy, asana and pranayama are deep, insightful, thought-provoking and rejuvenating. He demonstrates with grace and humility the teachings of this ancient art for the 21 Century. Simply, I am Inspired, and extremely grateful for you, Asia!

Spring Course Part II: Living Yoga

When: May 26 – June 24, 2017 (as Part II of the two-part spring course)

What most people understand of yoga begins and ends with what happens on their yoga mat, but yoga is so much more than that. This course will focus on how to integrate yoga into your life through a deeper understanding of yoga’s philosophy. We’ll discuss the Eight Limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, learn from yogis who make an impact in the world, and explore creative ways we can become more vibrant, grounded and inspirational. Prepare to evolve.

In this course you’ll learn:
  • How to make the practice of yoga your foundation of a powerful, meaningful life
  • Methods to build a better relationship with yourself (niyamas) and the world (yamas)
  • Tested meditation tools for mastering inner peace and self-awareness
  • The roots of yoga’s philosophy, and how to enjoy its fruits without getting lost in the weeds
  • Proven, simple meditation and breath practices for a clear mind free from negative samskara (poor mental habits)

The second half of this spring course is often students’ favourite. We take the ashtanga (“eight limbed”) yoga philosophy off the page and mat, and into your life – because if it doesn’t work in your life, then why learn it, teach it, or try to live by it? This time together will be full of self-inquiry, critical reflection on your life, your goals, your habits, your lifestyle design and your potential. We’ll take a look at how to use yoga’s principles to give your life structure, simplify where things have gotten complicated, clean out crap that’s no longer useful to you, and get you living with more ease and strength through simple, practical, and transcendent practices.

I have been practicing for several years but never before have the foundational theories and practices made sense to me on a practical level. They do now. Living Yoga has provided me with the opportunity to assess my goals for my own practice and life, and I know that I have tools to keep learning and growing my own practice.

Having completed Living Yoga I feel rejuvenated and I am truly grateful to have met all of the committed and passionate yogis that Pranalife brings together. I do not exaggerate when I say that this course is life-changing.

There’s a difference between being able to do yoga well and being able to skillfully teach others what you’ve learned. This course will give you the tools you’ll need to teach great classes in a way that’s safe, fun, and empowering. This training will set you apart as an elite instructor and give you the competence to have the confidence to lead.

In this course you’ll learn:
  • How yoga postures work together, and how to use them effectively
  • How to safely give students adjustments and modifications
  • How to design creative classes that move practitioners bodies and hearts
  • How to communicate your passion to others confidently
  • How to turn this dream job into a sustainable reality built on your unique strengths and goals

You’ll get heaps of practice designing sequences based on people’s needs and goals, building creative posture flows that are the perfect mix of strength and ease, learning and loving, and exploring mind, heart, and movement. Confidence is born of competence; the fall course is where you gain both. If you’ve ever studied under great yoga instructors, part of your desire to become a teacher is probably because you want to become that kind of teacher. This course is an in-depth training for becoming just that.

I do really feel Pranalife has superior training to what’s out there. You cover all aspects of yoga, not just “here are a few dozen postures and the lingo for those” and anything else you’re gonna drown. I can be thrown into any situation and feel competent to teach it.

Pranalife Yoga Teacher Training, with Advanced Instructor Asia Nelson. Kitchener | Waterloo | Toronto

When designing Pranalife Yoga Teacher Training, I interviewed teachers who’d trained with other schools/teachers/studios, and the one thing I heard over and over was that there wasn’t enough one-on-one time where they could review what they’d learned and practice teaching postures, modifying poses, and adjusting bodies with feedback from an experienced instructor. This training will give you just that: practical immersion in what you’ve learned through the course, so you can feel confident you’re doing it right when you teach.

It’s so HUGE getting the chance to practice teaching and getting feedback within a great community. We had so much hands-on learning, with Asia getting us to test poses on each other and presenting scenarios to prepare us for many of the realities of teaching we’d face after training.

I LOVED having the physical practice as part of the training, hearing the other teachers-in-training do it, listening to them in class, then having to apply it, taking turns, etc.

It was SO good that you got us practicing together. That’s how I discovered I couldn’t live without this. It helped me feel qualified to teach..

~ YTT graduates during a post-YTT group interview

You’ll come out with confidence. What I got from Pranalife training was confidence. It was thinking, “Maybe I can do this?” and then graduating and teaching for the first time and knowing, “I CAN do this, and I LOVE this.”
