Spring Course Part I: Elements of Yoga Practice

When: April 7 – May 6, 2018 (as Part I of the two-part spring course)

Being a great yoga instructor comes from having a solid understanding of yoga asana (postures) through theory and practice. In the spring course, we’ll pare your practice down to its bare bones and build it back up on a strong foundation of research and experience so you know what postures do, and why you’d do them (or not do them) to build your best practice.

In this course you’ll learn:
  • how bodies work, by studying anatomy (how we’re built), kinesiology (us in motion), and biomechanics (how external and internal forces act on us)
  • the benefits and contradictions of yoga movements, based on yoga’s core principle of ahimsa, or ‘doing no harm’ as well as the latest research in functional movement, including that of Back Biomechanics specialist Dr. Stu McGill.
  • foundational movements that will become building blocks for your own creative practice
  • the purpose of postures, based on experiencing and examining how postures work with different goals and limitations

The first course is an immersion in the physical practice of yoga. We reconsider yoga movements and how to move wisely through – or beyond – them. You’ll spend time playing with movement and learning about how postures work in your body, as well as bodies with different goals and limitations.

This teaching is very accessible – no previous training in anatomy, etc. required – with time to practice, explore, and know what you’re doing before teaching other people. By the end of this course you’ll better understand how to break postures down to make them work for you and your clients’ goals.

Spring Course Part II: Living Yoga

When: May 26 – June 24, 2018 (as Part II of the two-part spring course)

What most people understand of yoga begins and ends with what happens on their yoga mat, but yoga is so much more than that. This course will focus on how to integrate yoga into your life through a deeper understanding of yoga’s philosophy. We’ll start with the Eight Limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and from there explore creative ways we can become more vibrant, grounded and inspirational. Prepare to evolve.

In this course you’ll learn:
  • How to make the full practice of yoga your foundation of a powerful, meaningful life
  • Ways to build a better relationship with yourself (niyamas) and the world (yamas)
  • Tested meditation tools for mastering inner peace and self-awareness
  • The roots of yoga’s philosophy, and how to enjoy its fruits without getting lost in the weeds
  • Proven, simple meditation and breath practices for a clear mind free from negative samskara (poor mental habits)

The second half of this spring course is often students’ favourite. We take the ashtanga (“eight limbed”) yoga philosophy off the page and mat, and into your life – because if it doesn’t work in your life, then why learn it, teach it, or try to live by it? This time together is full of self-inquiry, reflection on your life, goals, habits, lifestyle design and potential. We’ll look at how to use yoga’s principles to give your life structure, simplify where things have gotten complicated, clean out crap that’s no longer useful to you, and get you living with more ease and strength through simple, practical, and transcendent practices.

I have been practicing for several years but never before have the foundational theories and practices made sense to me on a practical level. This course will give you the tools you’ll need to teach great classes in a way that’s safe, fun, and empowering. When designing Pranalife Yoga Teacher Training, I interview teachers who’ve trained with other schools/teachers/studios, and the one thing I hear over and over is that there wasn’t enough time in their training where they could review what they’d learned or practice teaching/modifying postures with feedback from an experienced instructor. It’s so HUGE getting the chance to practice teaching and getting feedback within a great community. We had so much hands-on learning, with Asia getting us to test poses on each other and presenting scenarios to prepare us for many of the realities of teaching we’d face after training.

 

I LOVED having the physical practice as part of the training, hearing the other teachers-in-training do it, listening to them in class, then having to apply it, taking turns, etc.
